About biodiversity indicators

Abundant biodiversity can increase ecosystem resilience

The development of biodiversity indicators has gained increasing international attention. Biodiversity indicators can reflect whether an ecosystem is healthy and resilient, and can monitor the current status and the developing trend of biodiversity. For example, the size of "forest cover" corresponds with ecological, socio-economic, and cultural impact, which makes it an indicator for both land-use and the pressure of development.

When developing each indicator, TaiBON adopts a rigorous attitude and discusses it with experts in various fields. At the same time, TaiBON refers to the experiences and framework in developing international biodiversity indicators and then compiles a set of biodiversity indicators suitable for Taiwan. Managing with these indicators, we hope to achieve the goal of conservation and sustainability in an effective way. The "indicators" currently developed in Taiwan may mean different types. To avoid confusion among readers, the following table lists the definitions of relevant indicators.

  • Biodiversity indicator: refers to the conversion of complex biodiversity information into a simple, easy-to-understand, and quantifiable tool for monitoring the progress of biodiversity conservation.
  • Monitoring indicator: is developed towards a monitoring object that has quantifiable, long-term, and standardized methods for measurement.
  • Performance indicator: is used to determine the degree to which organizational goals are attained.
